The NSW marine environment is home to thousands of different species of aquatic plants and wildlife. A unique mixing of coastal currents means that about 80% of these marine plants and animals are found only in Australian waters.
But these plants and animals are under threat. Overfishing, pollution, climate change, introduced marine pests, emerging diseases, inappropriate development and lack of adequate protection are all putting our marine wildlife at risk. With only 6.7% of NSW marine waters completely protected in sanctuary zones, there is an urgent need to improve the protection of marine species and ecosystems.
Only by ensuring fisheries and the marine environment are managed in an ecologically sustainable manner will NSW be able to enjoy a socially and economically sustainable commercial seafood industry and a thriving recreational fishing sector into the future.
