In the lead up to the NSW election, the Liberals and Nationals promised to protect “critical agricultural and environmental assets” from the destructive impacts of runaway mining and coal seam gas development.

They promised to introduce strategic land use plans that would identify “sensitive areas” that should be made off limits to mining and coal seam gas extraction.

They promised to protect high value conservation lands and strategic agricultural land.

They promised a new approach.

To date, they have comprehensively failed to deliver on that promise.

The NSW Government’s proposed land use policy will leave the state’s most critical wildlife habitat and natural areas open to destructive mining and gas development.

The draft land use plans released last month map high conservation value areas, but fail to provide clear legal protection for these areas.

Carefully mapping the most important natural areas in the state, only to allow them to be destroyed by mining, is bizarre and totally unacceptable. The government must recognise that these are natural areas too precious to destroy and impossible to replace.

Unrestrained mining development has already lead to unacceptable cumulative impacts on natural landscapes and local communities. A new approach is urgently needed.

The government must not turn its back on its promise to protect natural areas and local communities from the destructive impacts of mining and coal seam gas.

Take action today. Email Premier Barry O’Farrell calling on him to tear up his flawed land use plans and replace them with real protection for local communities, farmland, water and natural areas.

A copy will also be sent to the Ministers for Planning, Environment, Primary Industries and Mineral Resources.
