The rain wasn’t able to dampen the energy and enthusiasm of the 10,000 people who gathered at Walk Against Warming in Belmore Park on Sunday 15 August.
Al Gore Climate presenter Nell Schofield told the crowd that Australia's lack of political action on climate change was not only embarrassing but morally reprehensible, and she delivered arguably the ‘quote of the day’ urging people to vote for climate because “as Al Gore says, politicians are also a renewable resource”.
Three community speakers from diverse backgrounds shared personal stories of their grassroots climate work and made passionate calls for greater government action on climate change. Check out early pics from the Sydney and Penrith event here . |

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW in partnership with Australian solar company Ingenero, is challenging Sydney’s North Shore to install solar panels on 1,000 homes.
The North Sydney Solar Challenge invites North Shore residents to play their part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by installing solar panels on their roof and generating clean, green energy. Powering homes with clean energy from the sun will reduce the need for energy from polluting sources like coal and helps tackle climate change. Solar energy can lower a household’s carbon footprint by up to three tonnes every year. |

The forum will take place in Newcastle on Friday, 18 June 2010. Ordinary residents living in the Hunter Valley will be invited to hear from experts and deliberate on the question: “What should government, business and community do to ensure a good future for the Hunter Valley in a carbon constrained world.” |

The Sydney Morning Herald has recently published a series of articles (see below) on the massive expansion of the coal industry in the Hunter Valley. The articles look at coal coming into conflict with other industries such as horse breeding and wineries, as well as its effect on the local environment and health concerns.
The ABC TV's 7.30 Report also screened a story on the conflict between Bickham Coal mine and the horse breeding industry.
Disappointingly, coal's role as the number one cause of climate change hardly rates a mention in any of these stories. In many ways, climate change is the elephant in the room when it comes to the coal industry's future in the Hunter Valley. |

Despite the devastating impact on our climate, two more polluting power stations have been given the green light by the coal addicted NSW government.
We need the Keneally government to immediately rescind the negligent approval of power stations in Lithgow and the Hunter Valley, place a moratorium on dirty coal power and instead draw up plans for building clean energy infrastructure for NSW.
Your support today can help end the proliferation of coal-fired power in NSW . |

The Nature Conservation Council has condemned the State Government's approval of plans for new gas or coal-fired power stations at Mt Piper and Bayswater as "environmental negligence".
Giving the green light to burn even more coal is a disaster for the climate, with the potential to increase NSW's carbon emissions by 15 per cent. Even fuelling these power stations by gas will increase the state's emissions by seven per cent.

NSW can be transformed from a coal dependent state to a leader in clean energy.
The Nature Conservation Council will shortly be launching its 'Make NSW the Clean Energy State' campaign. Two new coal-fired power stations have been proposed - a disaster for the climate. Will the next state government allow these to go ahead and allow the coal industry to continue to expand and treaten our water supplies andargicultural land? Or will it implement energy efficiency programs, fast track renewable industry and use less dirty natural gas to replace coal-fired power stations? Will the next state government continue to expand our already congested motorways, or will it invest in public transport and freight rail? Will the next state government continue to allow the logging of native forests for woodchips, or will the protect them and the carbon they store? |

Australia’s largest ever community protest for action on climate change was held on Saturday 12 November, with more than 90,000 people taking part in Walk Against Warming in every major city and dozens of regional centres across the country.
More than 15,000 people marched through Sydney’s CBD for Walk Against Warming behind the banner - Australia says the Climate Can't Wait - sending a message to leaders in Copenhagen that they, their children and the planet cannot wait any longer for strong action on climate change. More than 40,000 people marched in Melbourne and up to 15,000 people participated in Brisbane.
A big thank you to all those who joined us in Sydney! You made a powerful statement that the Australian Government must be a leader not a straggler for a strong, fair and binding global agreement on climate action.
You can view television news coverage of Sydney's Walk Against Warming here .

Although coal is a major cause of climate change, the rush of applications to expand coal facilities and infrastructure in NSW continues.
Hot on the heels of the proposal to refurbish a mothballed coal-fired power station at Munmorah on Lake Macquarie, comes Ulan Coal Mine's application for an increase in coal production to 20MT per year with a 21-year lease.
The State Government should not allow the expansion of coal production or grant long-term leases if NSW is to address its growing rate of greenhouse gas emissions and transition towards a clean, green future.
The Nature Conservation Council urges groups and individual's to make a submission against the proposal by Friday 4th December. You can use our submission guideline available here . Email submissions to:
