The Nature Conservation Council of NSW hosts the Environment Liaison Office (ELO),
which provides a link between NSW environment groups and members of the
NSW Parliament. We keep watch on environmental issues being debated at
parliament and ensure the views of environment groups and their members
are represented.

A review of environmental legislation during the Iemma government
Under Morris Iemma’s leadership of the NSW ALP since 3 August 2005 laws
have been passed that undermine the planning and development decision
system, attack community participation and court challenges and
introduce an even more uncertain future for threatened species. In
almost all cases these laws were supported by the Opposition, with the
role of ‘environmental conscience’ left largely to The Greens and
Democrats. |

The Threatened Species Conservation Amendment (Biodiversity Banking) Bill 2006 is unacceptable to the ELO groups. We asked Members of Parliament to oppose this Bill.
The Bill did not deliver better environmental or planning outcomes. The BioBanking scheme does not address the fundamental problems of land clearing and biodiversity loss due to overdevelopment. The NSW Government must commit to an alternative mechanism which protects all remaining high conservation value areas.
