The Nature Conservation Council of NSW (NCC) has had an interest in fire management, bushfire education and advocacy for sustainable land policy since at least 1979. In the early nineties the NCC Bushfire Program was established. However in 1994, large fires triggered an increased role for NCC in fire management... The Bushfire program doesn't run individual campaigns as such, but focuses on supporting its representatives and giving assistance and advice in policy making decisions.

 | Crowdy Bay National Park Bushfire Workshop Fire Frequency and Impact on BiodiversityA small group of NCC bushfire representatives attended a two day workshop on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th June 2010 that focused on how fire frequency in Crowdy Bay National Park and its surrounds has influenced vegetation change over time and the implications for biodiversity. Presentations were given by local officers from the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, NSW Rural Fire Service, Great Lakes City Council and Country Energy. Issues examined included: - implementing asset protection zones at the urban interface;
- vegetation management under power lines;
- the benefits to land managers of the Hotspots Project; and
- the impacts that fire has had on Crowdy Bay National Park and the surrounding area of Harrington.
The workshop included a field trip, where several areas were visited to investigate some of the fire management issues of the area.
To find out more about the workshop a summary report (pdf 81kb) can be downloaded. Should you wish to find out more about the workshop presentations please contact Greg Banks at

 | Biodiversity Under Fire
Mon 22nd and Tue 23rd June 2009 Sydney The two-day Biodiversity Under Fire Conference was a big success. More than 170 delegates gathered to discuss ecologically sustainable bushfire management in the context of the threats to Australia’s biodiversity.
They shared ideas on the complex issue of bushfire management, discussed the lessons learnt from previous bushfire campaigns and gained a new understanding of the role of fire in the Australian landscape.
