What is the Food Waste Challenge? The Nature Conservation Council of NSW (“NCC”) has partnered with The City of Sydney to run The Food Waste Challenge. The Food Waste Challenge is a new program designed by the NCC. It is a free community program for people who live in the City of Sydney LGA. Its main aims are to help households waste less food, save money and our environment. The Food Waste Challenge focuses on: - raising the awareness of the economic and environmental impacts of food waste in NSW; - driving behaviour change by providing simple steps, tips and changes participants can make in the home to help adopt more sustainable behaviours around food planning, preparation and storage to avoid food waste; - reducing the amount of "good" food (i.e. food that is edible, NOT peelings, apple cores etc) being sent to landfill. Why do we need to worry about Food Waste in NSW? Households spend an average of $1036 per year on edible food that is thrown away in the household bin. Across NSW, this totals $2.5 billion of edible food that is thrown away. When food waste is thrown away and sent to landfill, together with other organic materials, it becomes the main contributor to the generation of methane - a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide in its impact on climate change. Further, when we waste food, we also waste all of the resources, fuel, energy and water that are used to get the food to us. What does the Food Waste Challenge involve? There are four workshops in the Challenge. We have held three workshops already on the topics of: - Leftovers - Shopping, portion sizes and meal planning - Food storage and preparation. The final workshop will be held on 6 September: 6 - 8 pm at the Surry Hills Community Centre and Library. The topic is on: Where does our food come from? Light refreshments will be provided at the workshops and we aim to be as interactive as possible, with guest speakers and interaction between participants.
Registration
We are looking for 100 participants who live in the City of Sydney LGA area to register to take the Food Waste Challenge.
A recent survey conducted by the NSW Government Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water called "The Food Waste Avoidance Benchmark Study 2009" showed that the people who waste the most food are:
- Young Consumers (agred 18 - 24)
- Households with incomes more than $100,000 per year
- Families with children.
We are particulary keen to have these groups register to take the Challenge but all people from the City of Sydney LGA are welcome to register.
