Wondering what to get your mum for Mother’s Day? Wanting to find her a present that will appeal to her maternal instincts and save the planet at the same time? Why not adopt her a shark?
"They Grey Nurse Shark is critically endangered with only about 500 individuals surviving off the
NSW coastline,” said Cate Faehrmann, executive director of the Nature Conservation Council of NSW.
“With a long gestation time, and only about 250 female sharks left alive, the Grey Nurse Shark is obviously in dire straits.
You can adopt a shark for as little as $75 a year, $140 for two years or $200 for three years. The money goes towards raising awareness and protecting the grey nurse shark.
Each 'parent' receives:
- Adoption Certificate
- A Grey Nurse Shark tattoo and poster
- The opportunity to name your shark and register it on our ‘adopt a shark’ website
- Grey Nurse Shark CD containing educational games and fact sheets and some great Grey Nurse Shark images
- Quarterly email updates on Grey Nurse Sharks with information articles, research updates, sighting reports and other marine conservation information
“The Grey Nurse Shark is harmless to humans, but large numbers have been killed by humans because of their ferocious appearance. They are now critically endangered.
"This Mother’s day, surprise your mum by adopting a shark for her," Ms Faehrmann said.
Adopt a Shark is supported by Project AWARE, the dive industry's leading non-profit environmental organisation. Proceeds go to the Nature Conservation Council’s shark conservation program.
