Renewed solar scheme welcomed

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW has welcomed the redirection of funds back into the solar hot water rebate programme.

 

The Federal government has announced $24 million will be spent to help local councils install solar or heat pump hot water systems in community facilities and $21 million to the existing home energy saver scheme for low-income Australians to buy more efficient electrical items.

Federal intervention on Great Barrier Reef underscores need for strong environmental laws

Today’s announcement by Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke that he will “stop the clock” on the Alpha coal mine demonstrates the importance of strong federal environmental laws, according to the Nature Conservation Council of NSW.

“Minister Burke has made it abundantly clear that he has lost faith in the Queensland government’s ability to protect the Great Barrier Reef from destructive development,” said Pepe Clarke, NCC Chief Executive Officer.

Federal environment laws under attack on World Environment Day

Environmental groups from across the country today challenged an unprecedented attack on Australia’s environmental laws in a united front on World Environment Day.

 

“Environmental laws safeguard our way of life. They protect our land and wildlife, and ensure that our air and water are not polluted by destructive development,” Humane Society International Director Michael Kennedy said.

Premier’s broken promise trades national parks and public safety for Shooters’ votes

The state’s peak environment group has today condemned the Premier’s backflip on shooting in national parks.

“The Premier has repeatedly assured the NSW public that our national parks would not be opened up to hunting. Today he has broken that promise.” said Pepe Clarke, NCC Chief Executive Officer.

“This is a serious breach of faith and a complete departure from the reason our national parks were established – for the conservation and enjoyment of nature.

Proposed Basin Plan fails health of river: Minister Burke must intervene to deliver environmental outcomes

The proposed Murray Darling Basin Plan released today fails the environment and the hopes of millions of Australians who want to see our country's mightiest river system restored to health, according to the Nature Conservation Council of NSW.

“This plan fails to meet the most important target – to deliver enough water to the environment to ensure a healthy long-term future for the Murray Darling”, said Pepe Clarke, NCC Chief Executive Officer.

The climate won’t wait for action on renewable energy

The latest report from the Climate Commission, released today, highlights the need for urgent action on climate change in NSW, according to the state’s peak environment group.  

The report, Climate impacts and opportunities for NSW, finds that climate change impacts on people and the environment will be will be serious and far reaching, with an increasing risk of heatwaves, bushfires, changing patterns of drought and heavy rainfall.

NSW Government must take action to protect local neighbourhoods from coal seam gas

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW has welcomed Dart Energy's announcement that it will not drill for coal seam gas at St Peters in Sydney's inner west, and has called on the NSW Government to revoke the company's drilling approval.

Destruction of rivers, streams and wetlands, clearing of forests and woodlands, pollution of air and water, loss of rich farmland, destruction of ancient cultural heritage and irreversible harm to drinking water catchments.

 

These are the extraordinary environmental and social impacts occuring across NSW as a result of rapid and unrestrained expansion of the mining and coal seam gas industry, according to the Nature Conservation Council of NSW.
