EVENT ALERT Giant shark fin delivered to Minister Garrett’s office in protest at shark fin exports Mon 11 May

Federal Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, is set to make a decision that could keep NSW exporting the fins of threatened and endangered sharks for years to come.

“Many of our shark species are at risk from overfishing, and the health of our oceans is potentially compromised purely because of the high price for shark fins in Asian markets,” Ms Faehrmann said.

“In the past year alone shark catches have undergone a five-fold increase and the NSW Department of Primary Industries has acknowledged that the shark fishery is unsustainable at current levels.

“Minister Garrett is currently assessing the NSW shark fishery for ongoing export accreditation and we strongly urge him to ban all shark fin exports,” Ms Faehrmann said.
