The Nature Conservation Council of NSW urges the Federal Government and Opposition to examine the Greens’ Safe Climate Bills launched today, and seriously consider adopting the measures outlined as a sensible and effective path to combating climate change.
“The Safe Climate Bills launched by The Greens have thrown the gauntlet down to the Government and Opposition by presenting effective and comprehensive climate policies based on what the latest climate science tells us is necessary to avoid catastrophic climate change,” Executive Director, Cate Faehrmann, said today.
“The current Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme legislation is a complex dud that will lock Australia into a high pollution economy. The Nature Conservation Council urges the government to sit down with the Greens and negotiate a better scheme that will actually be effective at reducing emissions.
“The Safe Climate Bills show there are plenty of effective policies that can immediately begin reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, but what Australia is currently lacking is the political will from both major parties.
“It’s time the political debate shifted from leadership speculation and compensation for big polluters to a serious examination of alternative climate change policies such as those outlined in the Safe Climate Bills and the Plan B approach promoted by Conservation Councils across Australia.
“The Nature Conservation Council welcomes the Greens’ plan to move from dirty coal to 100% renewable energy, protect native forest carbon stores, invest in public transport and fast rail, and promote energy efficiency,” Ms Faehrmann said.
