As the world’s population reached seven billion people, the Nature Conservation Council of NSW passed a detailed Ecologically Sustainable Population and Nature policy on Sunday.
The policy acknowledges that increasing population growth and high consumption are endangering the natural environment, and lists priority actions for reaching an ecologically sustainable population in Australia.
“As the world hits 7 billion people, it is a wake-up call for us all to realise that increasing population and increasing per capita consumption are unsustainable,” said Chief Executive Officer Pepe Clarke.
“Increasing population and unsustainable consumption patterns are major drivers of environmental degradation and climate.
“We are using the world's resources faster than they can be replenished, polluting the air and water on an unprecedented scale and degrading natural ecosystems beyond their ability to recover.
“We have only one Earth, and we need to confront issues such as these to ensure we become sustainable,” Mr Clarke said.
