Demand management and greater efficiency could help shield households from rising electricity prices

The Keneally government can help ease the burden of rising electricity prices with better energy efficiency incentives and a public awareness campaign on how to save energy, according to the Nature Conservation Council of NSW.

A 20 per cent cut in energy use through energy efficiency would save the typical household up to $200 a year on their energy bills. It would also go a long way to reducing the 14 tonnes of carbon pollution produced by the average Australian home each year.

Internationally significant bird breeding site at risk from Tillegra Dam

An independent review of the river flow impact of the controversial Tillegra Dam has found it will jeopardise the health of the Williams River and internationally-recognised bird breeding areas of the Kooragang Wetlands in the Hunter region, according to the Nature Conservation Council of NSW.

Nature Conservation Council of NSW is calling on the Keneally Government to dump the Tillegra Dam proposal in the Hunter Valley.

A socio-economic report released through Parliament has severely criticized the options analysis used by Hunter Water Corporation to justify constructing a dam the size of Sydney Harbour on the Williams River above Dungog.

Koalas will disappear from wild without urgent protection

On National Threatened Species Day, the Nature Conservation Council of NSW has warned Australian governments that they must act now to save our threatened koalas from the same fate as the extinct Tasmanian tiger.

Many koala populations are already under stress from encroaching human development and logging, and the situation will only become more dire as the impacts of climate change and human population growth take effect in coming years.

Marine parks too precious for ill-informed political point scoring

The Liberal candidate for Eden-Monaro, David Gazard, should stop running an ill-informed scare campaign against marine parks in a desperate bid for votes, according to the Nature Conservation Council of NSW and National Parks Association of NSW.

Mr Gazard has created ripples with claims there will be an immediate halt to the national marine park process if the Coalition wins government in the Federal election. But the vast tide of scientific and community support is firmly in favour of the benefits of marine parks.

Abbott plays politics with the future of Australia’s precious marine environment

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW and National Parks Association of NSW have denounced Opposition Leader Tony Abbott’s election pledge to halt marine protected areas as a grave threat to the healthy future of Australia’s oceans and marine life.

“The Liberal party’s decision to abandon the effective protection of our vulnerable and unique marine environments is a cheap political stunt with no scientific basis,” Nature Conservation Council, Chief Executive Officer, Pepe Clarke said today.
