Tens of thousands will take to Sydney streets next month calling for climate action
With world leaders discussing a global deal on climate change in Copenhagen from next week, the Nature Conservation Council is expecting a record number of people to attend Walk Against Warming on Saturday 12 December.
“While our global leaders talk the talk at Copenhagen, we’re walking the walk all over the world as a call for strong leadership and tough, swift action from our governments to deal with the climate crisis,” Cate Faehrmann, event organiser and executive director of the Nature Conservation Council of NSW, said today.
Peak conservation groups urge rejection of weakened Emissions Trading Scheme
The peak conservation councils around the country today called on both sides of politics to reject the amended and now fatally flawed emissions trading legislation and instead commit to action that will reduce Australia’s emissions by at least 40 per cent by 2020.
Dugong death prompts call for removal of all beach shark nets in NSW
The state’s peak environment group has called for shark nets to be removed from NSW beaches after the death of an adult female dugong in a net off Sydney’s Coogee beach today.
“Shark nets are quite the misnomer as these indiscriminate death traps take their toll on a wide range of marine animals, including the endangered dugong found today,” Marine Campaigner Ben Birt said today.
Coal industry big winners from ETS deal

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW supports Rivers SOS’s landmark Land and Environment court challenge commencing today of the State Government’s approval of longwall mining directly under a key source of Sydney’s water supply, Woronora Dam.

Solar support will provide much-needed boost for NSW renewables industry
New jobs, economic growth and fewer greenhouse emissions are the ‘win-win’ result for NSW following the government’s decision to increase the rebate for households to install solar panels and also pay them for the extra electricity they generate, the Nature Conservation Council of NSW said today.
The Premier has announced households will receive an increase in the rebate available for installing solar panels by $1500 and that a ‘gross feed in tariff’ will be introduced, paying households for thee extra electricity they produce.
Local Government Association wants National Parks kept safe for nature
The Annual Conference of the Local Government Association last week resolved to express concern about opening up National Parks to recreational hunting and commercial development.
The Local Government Association is concerned about any move to allow recreational shooting and
plans by the NSW State Government to develop commercial facilities inside National Parks. The
Association is also concerned that the National Parks and Wildlife Act and the Wilderness Act may be
amended to facilitate development.
Fix renewable energy laws flaw to save green jobs
The Nature Conservation Council of NSW today called on all parties to come together to fix legislation that has created the problem of ‘phantom’ renewable energy certificates flooding the market and pushing out large scale renewable energy projects like wind farms and reducing the number of green jobs.
