Sydney cannot afford high price of desalination
The State Government must ensure the Kurnell desalination plant only operates as a last resort option for Sydney’s water supply and should shift its focus to more sustainable water solutions in its review of the Metropolitan Water Strategy, says the state’s peak environment group.
“The Government must use this review as an opportunity to keep its promise that the desalination plant will only operate as a back-up water supply,” Nature Conservation Council of NSW executive director Cate Faehrmann said today.
Moratorium on bottled water extraction needed
The recent decision by the Land and Environment Court to allow a water bottling facility in Theresa Park at the foothill of the Southern Highlands highlights the need for a moratorium on similar approvals until groundwater extraction can be proven sustainable, says the state’s peak environment group.
“Bottled water is marketed as a ‘pure’ alternative to tap water although it is anything but good for the health of our natural environment,” Nature Conservation Council of NSW executive director Cate Faehrmann said today.
Can the Central Coast be better prepared for bushfires?
Proactive approaches to fire management for the protection of life, property and the environment will become increasingly important as the rules applied in the past change under climate change.
“Many areas of Australia can expect an increase in bushfire activity and the number of days when fire danger ratings are very high to extreme as the impacts of climate change take hold,” Hotspots Strategist Waminda Parker said today.

Extinctions will escalate if Government continues weak approach to climate change
Addressing the impact of climate change on endangered species and their habitat is the best way for the Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett to protect our wildlife from extinction, according to the Nature Conservation Council of NSW.
“Scientists are telling us that up to a quarter of our plants and animals will not survive a global temperature increase of more than 1.5 to 2 degrees,” Nature Conservation Council of NSW executive director Cate Faehrmann said today.

Senate correct to reject weak CPRS Bill, now government must strengthen targets
While the Senate was right to reject the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) in its current form, the Government must go back to the drawing board to strengthen the bill and remove payouts to big polluters, according to the Nature Conservation Council of NSW.
“The government should stop playing politics and pandering to the pollution lobby, and come back with a system that has strong targets and will transform the Australian economy to clean energy,” Nature Conservation Council of NSW executive director Cate Faehrmann said today.
