Government green light for river red gum assessment welcomed

The State’s peak environment group congratulates the NSW Government for commissioning an independent regional assessment of the Riverina region and its significant red gum forests.

“The independent inquiry is an important step towards the protection of NSW’s iconic river red gum forests,” Nature Conservation Council of NSW executive director Cate Faehrmann said today.

“We know that one of the best ways of ensuring the future of these forests is to create a chain of new river red gum national parks along the Murray River.

NSW misses opportunity to shine as Australia’s leading solar state

The state’s peak environment group says the solar bonus scheme announced today will provide a boost for the solar industry, but it means that NSW has missed an opportunity to be Australia's leading solar state.

“The solar bonus scheme will provide a boost for the solar industry, but doesn't go far enough and means that NSW has missed an opportunity to be Australia's leading solar state,” Nature Conservation Council of NSW executive director Cate Faehrmann said today.

Relaxing water restrictions ignores impact of climate change on rainfall

The easing of water restrictions by the State Government sends the wrong message about water consumption, according to the state’s peak environment group.

“Rainfall will be more variable under climate change so we must continue to use water efficiently to meet the demands of future dry periods,” Nature Conservation Council of NSW executive director Cate Faehrmann said today.

NSW cannot afford a business as usual approach to water and energy investment

Today’s State budget does not make the crucial water and energy infrastructure investments needed to substantially decrease greenhouse gas emissions and move towards an economy powered by clean, green energy, according to the state’s peak environment group.

“This budget was disappointingly light on green initiatives,” Nature Conservation Council of NSW executive director Cate Faehrmann said today.

Environment groups representing 400,000 Australians unite to oppose emissions trading legislation

An emergency meeting of the environment organisations, representing more than 400,000 Australians, in Canberra has also produced a new report outlining a suite of measures that can be in place within two years to put Australia within reach of halving its greenhouse emissions within a decade.

Australia must invest in genuine renewable energy, not ‘clean coal’ conjecture

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW has welcomed the increased spending on renewable energy announced in last night’s Federal budget, but warns that to be genuinely effective the money must be spent on true green power such as solar, wind and geothermal, rather than unproven carbon capture and storage technologies.

Ceasing logging will create jobs and help climate change

The decision by the Federal Minister for the Environment, Peter Garrett, is one that is necessary, said the State’s peak environment group today.

“The NSW Government has known this was coming for a long time,” Cate Faehrmann, executive director of the Nature Conservation Council of NSW said today.

“The State Government has known the logging there was completely unsustainable and that it had to stop.

“Last year the Victorian Premier John Brumby committed to protect 95,000ha of Murray River Red Gum forests.

EVENT ALERT Giant shark fin delivered to Minister Garrett’s office in protest at shark fin exports Mon 11 May

Federal Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, is set to make a decision that could keep NSW exporting the fins of threatened and endangered sharks for years to come.

“Many of our shark species are at risk from overfishing, and the health of our oceans is potentially compromised purely because of the high price for shark fins in Asian markets,” Ms Faehrmann said.
