Maules Creek mine approval a disgraceful failure of government policy

Today’s decision to approve the Maules Creek mine is a disgraceful failure of public policy, and proof that the NSW Government has comprehensively failed to deliver protection for critical environmental assets, according to the Nature Conservation Council of NSW.

The NSW Planning Assessment Commission today approved the Whitehaven Coal proposal to carve a swathe through Leard State Forest in the state’s north west, opening the way for destruction of more than 1,800 hectares of high conservation value wildlife habitat.

Government sitting on its hands while clearing pushes koala to the brink

The NSW Government is sitting on its hands while thousands of hectares of native bushland has been cleared near Moree and in other parts of the state, threatening the survival of local koala populations and destroying habitat for threatened wildlife, the state’s peak environment group said today.

More than 1,000 hectares of bushland near Moree, documented as important koala habitat, has been bulldozed and an investigation is underway, but the NSW Government has said it may not take any enforcement action until Christmas.

Polling released today shows 85 per cent of Australians agree the Federal Government should be able to block or make changes to major projects that could damage the environment.

The regional land use plans released today send a clear message to communities across New South Wales that their needs for clean water and a healthy environment come a distant second to the demands of a rampant mining industry, the Nature Conservation Council of NSW said.

“The land use plans released today fail to deliver on the government’s promise to protect critical environmental assets,” said Pepe Clarke, NCC Chief Executive Officer.

New planning system must safeguard the environment and engage communities

The review report, Our Environment, Our Communities, prepared by the Nature Conservation Council of NSW, Total Environment Centre and EDO NSW, proposes substantial changes to the state’s planning system, to better protect the environment and promote meaningful community involvement in planning decisions.

Bulga residents launch court challenge to Rio Tinto mine

Health and environmental concerns have driven the small community of Bulga in the Hunter Valley to launch a landmark court challenge against the expansion of a coal mine today in Sydney, testing the NSW Government’s mining policy.

The community’s legal challenge has exposed a hole in the NSW Government’s mining policy and, if successful, will have far reaching consequences for companies trying to ‘offset’ the destruction of native habitat they cause, the Nature Conservation Council of NSW said.

NSW Koala habitat at risk under new fast track development laws

Measures to prevent destruction of koala habitat must be a key element of the NSW Government’s promised new planning laws, the Nature Conservation Council of NSW said today following alarming evidence of the decline of the iconic species.
