Eastern Star Gas has conducted coal seam gas exploration and production activities in the Pilliga forest without seeking federal assessment on matters of national environmental significance, according to a report by the Northern Inland Council for the Environment, The Wilderness Society and the Nature Conservation Council of NSW.

Federal assessment needed for massive coal seam gas development in the Pilliga

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW has welcomed the decision by Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke to require federal assessment and approval of a proposal by Eastern Star Gas to develop a massive coal seam gas field in the Pilliga Scrub, near Narrabri in northern NSW. 

Federal assessment and approval process will also be required for the associated development of a major gas pipeline and an LNG export processing facility at Kooragang Island at Newcastle.

Premier must shoot down speculation over Shooters Party demands

The Shooters and Fishers Party are way off target if they expect conservationists and the community
to accept political deals that open up national parks to hunting and ban new national parks and marine
parks, according to the Nature Conservation Council of NSW.

As reported in today’s Sydney Morning Herald, the Shooters Party presented the former Labor
government with a long ‘hunting’ list winding back vital environment protection for our native wildlife,

Basin Plan Talk in Orange

Labor coal and gas plan stretched at the seams

Labor’s Coal and Coal Seam Gas Plan will not go far enough to restrain the serious threats posed by the rapid expansion of coal and coal seam gas mining it has allowed across the state over the past 16 years, according to the Nature Conservation Council of NSW.

“The Coal and Seam Gas Plan is too little, too late for the growing number of communities unwilling to risk their health, natural environment, water supplies and food production for dangerous mining projects,” CEO Pepe Clarke said.

Conservation must be core responsibility of new government

NSW’s leading conservation groups have welcomed the Coalition’s recognition that protecting and enhancing the natural environment should be a core responsibility of our next State government.

The Coalition’s investment $103 million over four years will deliver positive environmental outcomes by supporting improved management of natural areas and resourcing community action to restore degraded bushland. However, greater investment will be required to adequately address the challenges facing our environment in coming years.
