You can help end the senseless destruction of our native forests for woodchips

Gloucester We have a unique opportunity to protect our native forests from becoming woodchips and secure a sustainable future for the forests of NSW.

The historic agreement between Tasmanian conservationists, Australia's largest woodchipper Gunns Limited and government to end native forest logging provides a prime opportunity for an end to woodchip logging in NSW.

Tasmania has shown the way forward for a new era where high conservation value forests are protected for the essential life support they provide for wildlife and human communities. We can continue the momentum by reaching agreement on protecting our native forests and meeting timber supply needs from sustainably managed plantations in NSW. But we need your help to support the campaign.

Vision for biodiversity must be matched by detail and action

Biodiversity Conservation Stategy The Nature Conservation Council of NSW welcomes the release of Australia’s Biodiversity Conservation Strategy 2010-2030 as an important blueprint for the better protection of the nation’s precious wildlife, plants and ecosystems. Australia is one of only seventeen countries recognised worldwide for its exceptionally high levels of biodiversity, with many of our plants, mammals, birds and reptiles found nowhere else in the world.

“Commitments to the expansion of a system of national protected areas; greater Indigenous, community and private sector participation in biodiversity conservation; and a reduction in the impact of invasive species will make a significant impact on safeguarding the long-term wellbeing of our precious native species,” said Chief Executive Officer, Pepe Clarke.

“With the big-picture vision for biodiversity in place, we now need further detail on the implementation and action needed to address the biodiversity crisis facing Australia," he said.

Gunns announcement offers hope for better deal on NSW native forests

The announcement by Tasmanian forestry giant Gunns Limited that it will stop logging native forests in favour of plantation wood sources provides an opportunity for conservationists, industry and government in NSW to work on an agreement for a more sustainable forest future, according to the Nature Conservation Council of NSW.

Gunns has also indicated it does not want native forest burned for energy. However, the NSW government is currently considering a proposal by the second largest woodchipper of Australia’s native forest, Nippon Paper Group, to build a 5MW biomass plant fuelled by native forest ‘waste’ in Eden in the state's south east.

“It’s hard to believe that in the twenty-first century NSW is still allowing the loss of our precious native forests for low-value chips or burning them for electricity,” Nature Conservation Council of NSW Chief Executive Officer Pepe Clarke said.

Threatened species protection falters in NSW

On National Threatened Species Day, the Nature Conservation Council of NSW has condemned the NSW government's failure to protect threatened species and ecological communities across the state.

The Keneally government is unlikely to meet its own targets on the protection of NSW’s endangered wildlife, plants and ecological communities.

The latest performance review of the NSW State Plan shows not one of the key biodiversity targets vital for the protection of threatened species, from the extent and condition of native vegetation to the eradication or control of invasive species, has improved since 2006.

National Day of Protest against Native Forest Wood-Fired Power in Australia

wood-fired imageNational Day of Protest against Native Forest Wood-Fired Power in Australia
12.30pm - 2.30pm, Tuesday June 1
Outside Parliament House in Macquarie Street, Sydney

Send a message to the NSW government that burning native forest wood for fuel is not on.

With the proposed Power Plant at Eden currently being decided by the NSW government, now is the time to take a strong stand on this very important issue. The federal government’s 2009 inclusion of native forest biomass as ‘renewable energy’ in the MRET, allows the timber industry to accrue Renewable Energy Certificates for burning ‘wood waste’. It will lock in woodchipping of native forests for decades, take away from genuine renewables like wind and solar, and produce CO2 emissions greater than burning coal.

Help keep National Parks for nature

Demonstration to stop the National Park land grab
12 noon, Wednesday June 2nd
Outside Parliament House, Macquarie Street, Sydney
Bring: Banners, placards and your friends

If passed, the proposed National Parks and Wildlife (Sus. Tourism) Bill 2010 will facilitate exclusive, large-scale private development in our National Parks. The NSW government's proposed Bill will shift the focus of National Parks from conservation, and prevent future court appeals against inappropriate developments in our National Parks.

There should be bi-partisan support to strengthen National Park laws, not to give the Government and big developers a free hand over development.

Immediate action needed to protect our national parks

Barrington Tops National ParkUrgent action needed

The NSW Government's amendments to the National Parks and Wildlife Act have passed in the lower house of parliament.

Although environment groups have been negotiating in good faith with Environment Minister Frank Sartor senior legal advice has confirmed that the revised Bill is still a major threat to the future of national parks.

Act now and tell the NSW Government and the State Coalition you want national parks to remain public and protected, for nature and quiet enjoyment, forever.

Urgent action needed - logging of Mumbulla State Forest resumes

Three month old koala joeyAboriginal traditional owners have joined with more than 100 people from local community groups, locals and residents to protest the logging at Mumbulla State Forest in South East NSW.

Three traditional owners led a peaceful protest this week saying,
“ We, the traditional owners of Mumbulla Mountain, are distressed that woodchip logging is taking place on part of our sacred land. The land should be handed over to us to care for it, our sacred sites and the animals that live here. We need to preserve it for our culture and our future generations”.

Forestry breaches have been reported to the NSW Department of Environment by protesters this week.

Halt the logging and save the south east's koalas

Koala The Nature Conservation Council, Conservation Council of the ACT Region, SERCA and a coalition of conservation groups have called for Premier Kristina Keneally to intervene in the battle over the future of the last koala colony in the South East Forests of NSW.

Earlier this month (March 2010) local conservationists reported that contrary to assurances from the Environment Minister Frank Sartor, heavy machinery is already at work on the road network needed for access to the area.

Despite a recent Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water survey finding a small but healthy colony of koalas living in Mumbulla State Forest, logging is set to resume as early as next week.

Please send this email to Premier Keneally and Ministers Sartor and Macdonald urging them to halt logging and protect this precious koala colony.
